This is the home page for a live archived copy of MediaMOO!
MediaMOO was one of the first great Academic MOOs. Created in 1992 at the MIT MediaLab by Amy Bruckman, its purpose was to create an online gathering place for researchers studying the new computer enabled communications. MediaMOO was active until the turn of the Millennium when it was archived off of MIT's server and loaded to run on a PC under the desk of Dr. Michael Day at Northern Illinois University.
In January 2018 Dr. Cynthia Haynes of Clemson University, approached Dr. Day to get a copy of the core so that MediaMOO could be started up for people to experience and explore.
This copy of the MediaMOO core was archived in 2003, but is essentially unchanged since it last ran on MIT's servers in 2000.

Why resurrect this chunk of archaic technology?
MediaMOO was not simply an online chat board, as those where a dime a dozen in the '90s. Rather, MediaMOO was an immersive environment, a world online. This world was built entirely out of text. The very communications that MediaMOO was intended to facilitate helped to create that world.
Since when are treasures and jewels unearthed underneath your own home? Treasures always lay amongst the ruins.
